Hopkins Hour: Rehabilitation and Pain Management Research – Insights from National Pain Week

Event Summary


In alignment with National Pain Week, The Hopkins Centre hosted a special edition of the Hopkins Hour research series on Wednesday 30 July 2025. This virtual event spotlighted innovative research and practical strategies for improving pain management in rehabilitation settings.

The session was hosted by Dr Nicholas Aitcheson, rehabilitation and pain medicine specialist, who shared practical strategies and evidence-based resources to support both individuals and clinicians in managing pain effectively in everyday life.

Joining him was Occupational Therapist and pain researcher Hannah Kennedy, who presented on how Virtual Reality (VR) is driving innovation in rehabilitation. Her presentation included an overview of the VR Pain Education study, with insights from Metro South lead Niamh Jensen.

Kelly Walsh, Hopkins researcher and physiotherapist, and Frith La Vin, researcher and lived experience expert, provided an update on the Seed Grant project: Making Interdisciplinary Pain Management Programs More Patient-Centred: A Qualitative Study of Patients' Perceptions of the ENGAGE Pain Group. They explored how research findings aligned with Frith’s own experiences of living with persistent pain.

The event concluded with a panel discussion that explored how current research is informing and enhancing rehabilitation programs and clinical guidelines. Attendees gained valuable insights into how to access and apply research-backed tools and digital supports for pain management.
