Nutrition Prescription: Healing Pressure Injuries in Spinal Cord Injury

About the Project

Pressure injuries (or pressure sores) are a common complication of spinal cord injury (SCI). In cases where pressure injuries are deep or very slow to improve, surgery may be needed to help the area to heal so that people can return to their normal life. Before and after surgery, people need to keep off the area, which often requires many months of bed rest. Good nutrition is important for the healing process, but it is unclear how much nutrition people with SCI need to best support the healing process. As people are confined to bed for long periods, they are also unable to be weighed, which makes it even more difficult to tell if people are eating too much, or not enough.
