Defining dignity at the intersection of disability: a scoping review

Published 24th January 2024

This scoping review is the fourth publication from Dr Kelsey Chapman's thesis candidature body of work. The review investigates the concept of dignity in relation to disability, examining definitions and the use of inclusive research methods across 22 peer-reviewed studies. Despite various perspectives, there's no consensus on the definition of dignity, and inclusive research methods were notably absent.

The study highlights the importance of engaging with theoretical and empirical perspectives to develop a comprehensive, inclusive definition of dignity, crucial for informing interventions and policies. It underscores the need for rehabilitation practitioners to prioritise inclusive research methods to shape agendas, designs, and outcomes, advocating for dignified healthcare environments and equitable opportunities for people with disabilities.
